What is Polyethylene

Polyethylene is a polymer composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms that has a very strong molecular bond that has high flexibility. This high density material (HDPE) is used in producing irrigation pipes. The polyethylene material used to manufacture this pipe is different from other types of material used to make other polyethylene products.

Different kinds of polyethylene pipes depending on the type of application

Sewage polyethylene pipe

The sewage polyethylene pipes of Rothen Plast are made of polymer material. These pipes have many uses in industrial, urban, and interurban sewage. Also they are being used in drainage systems. These pipes are available in different dimensions. They can withstand different pressures up to 6A and can be produced for more pressures.

Polyethylene Gas supply pipe

One of the most common uses of this pipe is transferring natural gases in petrochemical industries. The modern countries use plastic pipes, specially polyethylene pipes to transfer gas in their industry. Some of the main important advantages of this pipe are easy installation and high resistance against fire and corrosion.

Polyethylene pipe for cables

It is one of the best options to cover and protect power cables, optical fiber cables, and etc. These cables will be protected from rainwater, impacts, and lightning by using this pipe.

This pipe is being used in water supply systems. This type of pipes is single-walled and can be used for different pressures between 2.5 to 25.

The advantages of this product include the following:

  • Easy installation compared to other pipes and fittings
  • High flexibility
  • High durability and affordable prices
  • Resistant against abrasion, chemicals, and natural factors
  • Low friction
  • No need for cathodic protection
  • Resistant against organic solvents
  • Resistant against ultraviolet rays of the sun
  • Resistant against harsh temperatures
  • Resistant against erosion and earthquakes

The polyethylene pipe (single-wall pipe, high pressure pipe, drip irrigation pipe) are made by extruding the EX3 polyethylene containing PE80 and PE100 materials. Other additives such as granules and low quality materials are not involved in manufacturing these pipes. The same high-density polyethylene material gives the shape, appearance, and resistance at pressures of 4 bar, 6 bar, 10 bar, 16 bar in gas supply polyethylene pipes up to 20 bar. These features make these pipes popular for gas supplying, drip irrigation system, and water supply systems. The HDPE pipe has a very good performance in mild temperate climates. The durability and performance of these pipes are depending on the right engineering and correct installation.

The polyethylene pipe is one of the most used pipes which is made by high density polyethylene material (HDPE), PE100 and PE80 produced at different petrochemical companies such as; Arak, Maron, Amirkabir, Jam, Ilam, Sabik in Saudi Arabia, and Burooj in UAE. These pipes are used in transferring water, gas, sewage systems, and any fluid or gas that wants to flow from a source to the final destination by passing a specific route.

 Types of polyethylene pipes

The polyethylene pipes are in two types of single-wall (high pressure) and double-wall (for gravitational method). each type of these pipes is for a specific purpose. The single-wall type is used in water transferring, drainage systems, and protecting power cables. The double-wall polyethylene pipe is used in small and large water and sewage networks in gravitational method and without internal pressure.

The single-wall polyethylene pipe

These pipes can withstand different pressures from 20 ATM to 40 ATM, depending on the raw material used in the pipe and the dimension. The features of the HDPE pipes compared to other types of pipes (Steel, asbestos, and etc), has made them the most popular and used pipes in water transmission and distribution networks.

The use of polyethylene pipes for water transmission purposes has increased over the years due to the new technology in producing high grade HDPE pipes, with best quality raw materials.

High pressure polyethylene pipe (under pressure)

The single-wall high pressure polyethylene pipe is used for transferring fluids under pressure. The types of single-wall pipes are determined by the type of raw materials and its application. It should be noted that the concept of high pressure in these pipes should not be misunderstood.

The high pressure polyethylene pipe is known as pipes with high thickness in the eyes of the people. But, this perception is no longer true due to technological advances in industry and manufacturing polyethylene. It means the weight of a polyethylene pipe with PE80 materials and 10A in load pressure is 721 g/m, and the same pipe with PE100 materials and 20A in load pressure is 721 g/m. These pipes are same when iyt comes to strength but, in terms of thickness and price, the pipe with PE100 materials is much better and affordable.

This type of pipe usually is under the direct pressure of the pump and exposed to the sunlight. Therefore, in order to maintain its strength and increase its durability, it is necessary to use materials with anti-UV compounds in its production. These pipes appear in black with blue strips.

The applications of high pressure polyethylene pipes

The high pressure polyethylene pipes have become so popular due to their applications. These pipes are being used in sewage networks (industrial, urban, and rural), natural gas transmission, pressured irrigation and sprinkler irrigation, mobile irrigation systems, drainage networks, and fluids systems.

The high pressure polyethylene pipe can often be used to transfer water with high pressure, specially on uneven and steep surfaces. These pipes are available in 6m and 12m in length, 10A and 16A in strength, and PE80 and PE100 materials. These pipes manufacture in different dimensions due to their application.

The polyethylene connection and fittings

The cost of connecting the polyethylene pipe is much lower than steel pipes, due to their fast and perfect sealing, therefore, the project will move much quicker. The different type of fittings can be made by polyethylene material and they can be used by welding methods. We will review the different types of connections at below:

Screw connections

The polyethylene screw connection is used for the pipes in different diameters up to 110mm. This type of connection can be used multiple times without damaging the pipe or the connecting point.

There are various types of fittings such as; equal connector, conversion connector, male and female connector, flanges, equal 90° elbow, 90° male and female elbow, equal Tee, conversion Tee, end cap, and different types of clamps.

The welding connection

This method of connecting is the most used for polyethylene pipes. The welding connectors are used in different pressures (4A, 6A, 10A, 16A) and different diameters from 25mm up to 1000mm.

The examples for this type of fittings are; flanges, reducers, equal Tee, 90° and 45° elbows, and 45° Tee. The other types of fittings can be produced at Rothen Plast by the request of the customer with the most modern German machinery.

The features of HDPE pipe fittings

The connection of these pipes is vary due to their application. The electrofusion method is for gas supply projects, and the screw connection is for water transmission up to 10A of pressure. For other projects, the polyethylene welding methods are used according to German DIN 16963 standard.

The polyethylene pipe has different types of standards for different applications. The most valid of them are German DIN 8074 standard for single-wall type, the DIN 16963 for fittings, the ASTM standard, and Isiri 1331 standard in Iran.

The features of polyethylene pipe

The polyethylene pipes can be the best choice for fluid transfer systems in various industrial projects, power plants, sewage networks, sprinkler irrigation systems, gas supply lines, and water supply networks.

These pipes are lighter in weight compared to the concrete and GRP type, and they are quick in production. Also, compared to the metal pipes, the polyethylene pipes are lighter in weight, more resistant against corrosion, and various fluids such as including acids and alkali. The cost of the polyethylene pipe is a lot better than other similar types. The polyethylene pipes have more mechanical strength, more flexibility, and more ring stiffness compared to UPVC pipes.

In general, the advantages of Rothen Plasts polyethylene pipes include the following

  • Easy installation
  • High strength, no leakage, and high flexibility
  • Resistant against changes in temperature
  • Perfect resistance against earthquakes and landslides
  • Resistant against corrosion and the sun’s ultraviolet rays
  • Resistant against rodents, termites and microorganisms
  • Low maintenance costs, savings in waste-water treatment costs due to no leakage in polyethylene fittings
  • Capable of adaptation to different temperatures
  • Ability to produce the pipe based on expected pressure

The application of polyethylene pipe

The main application of polyethylene pipe is transferring water from outside or inside of the cities to the main pipelines. The type of polyethylene material used to produce these pipes, should be different than other polyethylene products. The polyethylene materials are in different grades, and each type of these materials are used for a different purpose.

The polyethylene pipes have more lifetime, easy installation, resistant against chemical fluids and the sunlight, with  various fittings for different environments. These pipes are used in irrigation systems, sewage systems, transferring muddy water, chemical fluids, and high pressure gases with no pressure on the pipe.

The method of manufacturing the polyethylene pipe

The extruder method should be used in production of polyethylene pipe

  • First, the raw materials enter the extruder machine by suction
  • The polyethylene material melts and takes a paste shape by the heat in the extruder
  • The melted materials gets driven forward into a spiral shape
  • Next, the materials enter the template to get heated
  • Then, they pass through the calibrator and take form in the vacuum tank by applying appropriate pressure
  • The surface of the pipe gets cooled by cold water imminently after exiting the calibrator
  • The heat of the molten polyethylene material left from the template, gets gradually reduced in the vacuum tank and then in the cooling tanks by cold water

The produced pipe gets pulled out of the cooling tank by a pulling machine. Then, the information of the pipe gets printed on them and they get sliced into the needed lengths.

The manufacturer of first and second grade polyethylene pipes

The manufacturer of polyethylene is responsible to use the best and first grade materials to produce high pressure pipes so they would have enough strength to withstand pressures and impacts. This will prevent the breakage of the pipe and clogged waterway. Unfortunately, some companies use granules and scrap and even crush old pipes in their products, which leads to the production of low-strength, and third grade pipes, and market them as first-class polyethylene pipes.

It should be noted that second and even third grade polyethylene pipes have uses in some projects, but using them for water supply, specially high pressure irrigation, is very dangerous and wrong.

The second grade polyethylene pipes have applications such as use as sheaths for metal pipes, sheaths for wires and power cables and telecommunications, sheaths for fiber optics, and as templates under the roads for quick concreting in constructing bridges. They can also be used for transferring water and waste-water in gravitational method, used as inlet and outlet of sewers pipelines and septic tanks, constructing of garbage shooting and finally creating waterways in between of the guardrails of the highways and parks for irrigation the trees.

When asking about the price of this product, make sure to ask the manufacturer to grant you the price of all models so that you can easily decide. The manufacturer of polyethylene pipes should guide the customers in optimizing the price by knowing the type of use of the purchased pipes.

Rothen Plast has been selected as the top manufacturer of double-wall polyethylene pipes for consecutive years. We hope to be the top exporter of high pressure single-wall pipes in Iran in the year 2021.
